Explanation of the Book:

This extraordinary work of investigative journalism takes readers inside America’s isolated Mormon Fundamentalist communities, where some 40,000 people still practice polygamy. Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a multi-layered, bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith. Along the way he uncovers a shadowy offshoot of America’s fastest growing religion, and raises provocative questions about the nature of religious belief.

Explanation of the Book:

Greg Mortenson, the bestselling author of Three Cups of Tea, is a man who has built a global reputation as a selfless humanitarian and children’s crusader, and he’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. But, as Jon Krakauer demonstrates in this extensively researched and penetrating book, he is not all that he appears to be. Based on wide-ranging interviews with former employees, board members, and others who have intimate knowledge of Mortenson and his charity, the Central Asia Institute, Three Cups of Deceit uncovers multiple layers of deception behind Mortenson’s public image. Was his crusade really inspired by a desire to repay the kindness of villagers who nursed him back to health when he became lost on his descent down K2? Was he abducted and held for eight days by the Taliban? Has his charity built all of the schools that he has claimed? This book is a passionately argued plea for the truth, and a tragic tale of good intentions gone very wrong. 100% of Jon Krakauer’s proceeds from the sale of Three Cups of Deceit will be donated to the “Stop Girl Trafficking” project at the American Himalayan Foundation.

Explanation of the Book:

No one writes about mountaineering and its attendant hardships and victories more brilliantly than critically acclaimed author Jon Krakauer. In this collection of his finest work from such magazines as Outside and Smithsonian, he explores the subject from the unique and memorable perspective of one who has battled peaks like K2, Denali, Everest, and, of course, the Eiger. Always with a keen eye, an open heart, and a hunger for the ultimate experience, he gives us unerring portraits of the mountaineering experience. Yet Eiger Dreams is more about people than about rock and ice—people with that odd, sometimes maniacal obsession with mountain summits that sets them apart from other men and women. Here we meet Adrian the Romanian, determined to be the first of his countrymen to solo Denali; John Gill, climber not of great mountains but of house-sized boulders so difficult to surmount that even demanding alpine climbs seem easy; and many more compelling and colorful characters. In the most intimate piece, “The Devils Thumb,” Krakauer recounts his own near-fatal, ultimately triumphant struggle with solo-madness as he scales Alaska's Devils Thumb. Eiger Dreams is stirring, vivid writing about one of the most compelling and dangerous of all human pursuits.

Explanation of the Book:

Neurosurgeon, Dr. Eben Alexander, was brain dead for seven days. During that period he believes that he went through death's door and experienced the incredible beauty of Heaven. While he was there, he was given a message to bring back to the world. For him, the vision was life-changing. From being a scientist and a secular materialist, his worldview was transformed. Because of what happened to him, he now believes in the miraculous and in a life beyond death. But did he experience reality? Was the message that he was given true? Coleman Luck has spent decades studying illusions and the paranormal, both as a professional writer in Hollywood where illusion is the stock-in-trade, and as a mentalist and member of the Academy of Magical Arts at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. Also, he is a student of the Bible, educated at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. From this unique perspective Coleman examines the profound visions and truth-claims presented in Proof of Heaven. Coleman's other books include Angel Fall and The Mentalist Prophecies - Book One: Dagon's Illusion.

Is it all in her head, has she gone mad, or is heaven really calling? Boy: Built to Love No parent should have to bury their own child and yet that was exactly what they had to do. Stillborn; a young boy never to open his eyes to take in the world around him. And now Lucy and Jack's marriage was on the verge of crumbling under the strain of the grief they struggled to cope with. A grief made worse when the doctors tell them they'll never be able to have a child of their own due to complications from the last pregnancy. But what if it didn't have to be that way? What if there was a way of using science and technology to create a son they could love? What if Jack was able to use Artificial Intelligence to create A Boy: Built to Love? Is the answer to their problems to be found within the world of science-fiction or are they setting themselves up for yet more grief and sadness? The Missing Years of Thomas Pritchard August 3rd. 6:03am. The tranquil summer's morning was shattered by the desperate screams of Thomas' mother echoing down the near deserted suburban street. The few people milling about outside getting ready for their daily business had said they couldn't make out what the cries were about when they were interviewed. Not initially. Not until Anne, a pretty woman in her early thirties with shoulder length blonde hair, spilled out onto the street wearing nothing more than her dressing gown and slippers anxiously calling out for her five year old son, Thomas, to come out from wherever he was hiding. Eye witnesses reported Anne was closely followed by her husband Bill - a professional, clean-shaven man in his late thirties with dark, short hair - half dressed for work in his suit trousers and unbuttoned white shirt, and that he too looked just as frantic as the mother did. The year was 2003; the year Thomas disappeared from his home without a trace. * * * * * August 3rd. 6:03am. A young, fragile looking hand knocked confidently on the white PVC of the front door to number twenty-two. The hand belonged to a smartly dressed, skinny fourteen year old, fresh-faced boy. Whilst waiting for an answer to his knocking he slid a brown leather satchel off his shoulder down onto the floor as though the weight was too much for him to bear any more. He went to knock again but stopped himself when he heard the sound of footsteps from the other side of the door as the freshly woken homeowner came to answer his initial knocking. There was the slightest of pauses as keys were twisted in locks before the door opened as much as the strong, gold, security chain would permit it to. "Can I help you?" asked the homeowner, a frail looking woman in her late sixties. "Where's my mum?" asked the boy. The year was 2012; the year Thomas came home.

Explanation of the Book:

Author's Note About four years ago, I walked out of my life. Leaving professional middle class behind me, I set out in search of something more than acquiring and performing. I was so tired of being disappointed every time I arrived at a goal and found nothing there. I couldn't name it, but I suspected there was more to understand about this life. Receiving that understanding became my priority. Whether I was hiking or writing, dancing or crying, all I wanted was to know the more. My way of being changed immediately and gradually as I learned to let go of old stories and step into new freedom. I know now that Love, as a principle, is what I and you have been looking for. It is the beauty, freedom, and wellbeing that we imagine "heaven" to be. And the truth is we don't need to wait. We can live in Love and all its Joy right now. We don't have to die to live in heaven. Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander has been on the New York Times bestseller list for fifty-nine weeks. Browsing in Barnes and Noble days after I finished this manuscript, I picked up Alexander's book. I was interested solely because he is a neurosurgeon, not the kind of guy typically writing about heaven. Skimming, I noticed that his near death experience was strikingly similar to my own nonphysical experiences. So I read the whole the whole book in an afternoon. My first impression was true. Alexander and I have indeed received nearly identical revelations: Love is all there is. Fear isn't real. We can't fuck it up. Separation isn't possible. Every question is the answer. We both feel that we must share these universal principles as best we can to everyone who can hear them. We both learned to move into "heaven" by focusing on the feeling of it. We both know that everyone has the ability to do the same, and we can do it now. What if you are not who you think you are? I also share Alexander's challenge of putting nonphysical experiences into words after they have come through the filter of my physical body. It's like describing Einstein this way: He was a man. Can you imagine how much you would miss if that's all you knew of him? That's how it feels to offer you words about the experience of god. I offer them only because they might interest you enough to have your own experience. Well, that and because I really cannot imagine being able to keep this Joy all to myself. What if you have suffered enough? That is what I have been asking myself for the last few years, and now, I am asking you. Even if we are the worst people on the planet (whatever that means), we have more than paid our debt. We have spent enough days in fear and shame to punish our worst mistakes. If you don't believe that, at least ask yourself how continuing to punish yourself benefits anyone. Withholding joy and peace from your own life perpetuates misery in every life. What if you are so much more? I am writing to you to say that I have spent the last ten years in deliberate pursuit of the answer to this question. What I learned changed everything for me. What Alexander learned changed everything for him. It can change everything for you too. My message is not meant to challenge or replace a life that is working for you. What I am suggesting is a way of living that fulfills and delights moment by moment. If you aren't enjoying your life as much as surviving it, I suggest a change. What do you have to lose? You don't have to spend seven days in a coma to have the experience of Alexander. That is his message, and it is mine. He died. I sat. We learned the same good news: There are no prerequisites. You don't have to be a certain kind of person. No history or flaw can disqualify you. There are no rules, no competition, and nothing to achieve. As I illustrate with my own life experience, there is only Love, and we can choose to enjoy it at anytime.

Explanation of the Book:

Agafya is a short story by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov detailing a late night encounter between an intelligent but lazy village dropout and the peasant wife of a signalman. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, (29 January 1860 - 15 July 1904) was a Russian physician, dramaturge and author who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in history. His career as a dramatist produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Chekhov practised as a medical doctor throughout most of his literary career: "Medicine is my lawful wife", he once said, "and literature is my mistress." Chekhov renounced the theatre after the disastrous reception of The Seagull in 1896, but the play was revived to acclaim in 1898 by Constantin Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre, which subsequently also produced Chekhov's Uncle Vanya and premiered his last two plays, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. These four works present a challenge to the acting ensemble as well as to audiences, because in place of conventional action Chekhov offers a "theatre of mood" and a "submerged life in the text." Chekhov had at first written stories only for financial gain, but as his artistic ambition grew, he made formal innovations which have influenced the evolution of the modern short story. His originality consists in an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, later adopted by James Joyce and other modernists, combined with a disavowal of the moral finality of traditional story structure. He made no apologies for the difficulties this posed to readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them. Always modest, Chekhov could hardly have imagined the extent of his posthumous reputation. The ovations for the play, The Cherry Orchard, in the year of his death showed him how high he had risen in the affection of the Russian public-by then he was second in literary celebrity only to Tolstoy, who outlived him by six years-but after his death, Chekhov's fame soon spread further afield. Constance Garnett's translations won him an English-language readership and the admiration of writers such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Katherine Mansfield. The issues surrounding the close similarities between Mansfield's 1910 story "The Child Who Was Tired" and Chekhov's "Sleepy" are summarised in William H. New's Reading Mansfield and Metaphors of Reform The Russian critic D.S. Mirsky, who lived in England, explained Chekhov's popularity in that country by his "unusually complete rejection of what we may call the heroic values." In Russia itself, Chekhov's drama fell out of fashion after the revolution but was later adapted to the Soviet agenda, with the character Lopakhin, for example, reinvented as a hero of the new order, taking an axe to the cherry orchard. One of the first non-Russians to praise Chekhov's plays was George Bernard Shaw, who subtitled his Heartbreak House "A Fantasia in the Russian Manner on English Themes" and noted similarities between the predicament of the British landed class and that of their Russian counterparts as depicted by Chekhov: "the same nice people, the same utter futility."

Explanation of the Book:

Quantum physics studies the boundary zone between the physical part of the universe and the nonphysical realm. The Bible frequently refers to the non-physical realm as the unseen or spiritual realm. So, quantum physics has a lot to say about how the spiritual realm works, but there are many confusing and inaccurate interpretations out there in popular media these days. This book will provide simple and easy ways to demystify quantum physics and to understand the Bible. We will lift the veil of the confusion surrounding the unseen realm as we explore many intriguing scientific discoveries that show us about Heaven's reality. We will also see how well the latest discoveries about the unseen realm point back to realities revealed in Scripture.
