Explanation of the Book:

"Thomas Jefferson stands falsely accused of several crimes, among them infidelity and disbelief. Noted historian David Barton now sets the record straight. Having borne the brunt of a smear campaign that started more than two centuries ago, the reputation and character of American president Thomas Jefferson shows considerable tarnish, as lies and misunderstandings have gathered on his legacy. Noted early-America historian David Barton scours out the truth. Jefferson and Sally: Did he really have children by his slave, Sally Hemings? Jefferson and Jesus: Did he really abandon the faith of his family? Jefferson and the Bible: Did he really want to rewrite the Scripture? Jefferson and the church: Did he really advocate separation? Jefferson and slaves: What is the truth about his slaveholding and his statements that all are created equal? Jefferson and education: Did Jefferson really found the first secular, irreligious university? All of these questions deserve the cleansing light of truth. Barton has gone through the historical records, combed the original documents and letters, and examined the recent evidence, and his findings will upset the establishment. Barton shows the true man, the real Thomas Jefferson. Most readers will have the joy and surpriseof meeting him for the very first time"--

Explanation of the Book:

America, in so many ways, has forgotten it s past. Its roots, its purpose, its identity all have become shrouded behind a veil of political correctness bent on twisting the nation's founding, and its Founders, to fit within a misshapen modern world. The time has come to remember again. In 2012 prominent historian David Barton set out to correct the distorted image of a once-beloved Founding Father, Thomas Jefferson, in the best-selling book "The Jefferson Lies." Despite the wildly popular success of the original hardcover edition, a few dedicated liberal individuals and academics campaigned to discredit Barton s scholarship and credibility, but to no avail. In his new paperback edition, Barton responds to his critics in a lengthy new preface in which he takes to task his former publisher and directly answers with thorough documentation the main issues his detractors registered as well as provides numerous academic endorsements of his work. This new paperback version certifies that Barton s research is sound and his premises are true as he tackles seven myths about Thomas Jefferson head-on, and answers pressing questions about this incredible statesman including: . Did Thomas Jefferson really have a child by his young slave girl, Sally Hemings? . Did he write his own Bible, excluding the parts of Christianity with which he disagreed? . Was he a racist who opposed civil rights and equality for black Americans? . Did he, in his pursuit of separation of church and state, advocate the secularizing public life? Through Jefferson's own words and the eyewitness testimony of contemporaries, Barton repaints a portrait of the man from Monticello as a visionary, an innovator, a man who revered Jesus, a classical Renaissance man and a man whose pioneering stand for liberty and God-given inalienable rights fostered a better world for this nation and its posterity. For America, the time to remember these truths again is now."

Explanation of the Book:

"This work is primarily about properly understanding some claims about Thomas Jefferson ... This work is particularly aimed at understanding Jefferson in light of claims made about him by some religious conservatives, especially those by David Barton. ... The aims of this work are quite simple: to be dispassionate in the analysis of the claims about Jefferson and to understand the events in question in their proper theological and cultural context. ... The plan of the book is to take church and state claims first followed by a focus on Jefferson's personal views of the Bible and religion. Then, we [the authors] briefly examine claims relating to the University of Virginia and close with an examination of Jefferson's views of race and his actions as a slave owner"--Page xi-xiii.

Explanation of the Book:

The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Explanation of the Book:

"The Thomas Jefferson School of Law originated in the 1960s as the San Diego branch campus of a for-profit, non-ABA accredited Orange County law school that served principally part-time evening students. Although it was proud of educating working adults and produced some outstanding alumni, its attrition rates ranged between 50 and 75 percent and its pass rate on the California bar exam sometimes fell below 25 percent. In a half dozen years during the 1990s, the law school radically transformed itself. It separated from its parent, adopted a new name, became the first for-profit law school to gain ABA accreditation, and converted to a nonprofit. Admissions applications soared tenfold resulting in a nationally based student body second in California only to Stanford's for geographic diversity, the academic dismissal rated dropped below 10 percent and its California bar pass rate climbed above 75 percent. Graduates received offers from prestigious law firms in New York, Los Angeles and other cities. The law school was ranked 5th in the nation for the quality of academic life and 55th worldwide for the number of its faculty publications downloaded by scholars and practitioners. This story demonstrates what can be achieved through a commitment to excellence and a belief that people matter."--Page [4] of cover.

Explanation of the Book:

Teenaged Sally Hemings, mixed-race slave and sister-in-law to widower Thomas Jefferson, captured his heart while serving his daughters in Paris where he was U.S. Minister. It was there a 38-year relationship began. The historical novel, Sally of Monticello: Founding Mother, by Jefferson lecturer N.M. Ledgin, portrays a bright, assertive woman. She resolved his “inner conflict,” according to historian Winthrop D. Jordan, by ridding him of “high tension concerning women and Negroes.” Ledgin based the novel's timeline on Jefferson's precise recordkeeping and collection of letters.Controversy over the affair and over recent DNA findings continues to fuel books and articles. Sally decided voluntarily to return with Jefferson from slavery-free France to Virginia. They had several children who went free, and they left a mixed-race legacy now woven into the fabric of the nation. This novel is an illuminating take on history. It is filled with emotion and adventure in the voice of a self-educated, sacrificing woman, whose passionate love and devotion helped guide one of our founding fathers.

Explanation of the Book:

The Megachurch Book juxtaposes the way of the scripture to the way of the modern day church, particularly the megachurch. A broad range of subjects are explored including church membership, lavish buildings, dual church locations, the absence of men in the church, neglect of community, the corporate orientation of the megachurch, the tax exempt charter, and many more intriguing topics. The book primarily focuses on trends and practices that are found in African American community based megachurches. Certain topics are written in prose and biblical metaphoric style for greater impact. The more biblical versed a reader is, the more the book will resonate. In order to accommodate various levels of biblical familiarity, the author includes a Discussions and Supporting Scriptures section at the conclusion of each topic. The Megachurch Book was written to open dialogue, invoke discourse, and inspire church attendees to not only consider the appropriateness of certain megachurch practices, but to also question such practices.
