Explanation of the Book:

Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 12: Published in July and October, 1833 Had Newton examined his spectrum under the very same circum stances ia winter and in summer, he would have found the analysis of the beam more complete in summer, on account of the diminution of the sun's diameter; and, therefore, we are entitled to say that neither the number nor the extent of the coloured spaces, as given by Newton, are those which belong to homogeneous and uncompounded light. Explanation of the Book:

Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 4: April and August, 1829 It is just to take notice, in abatement of this objection, such as it is, on the score of prolixity, that M. Sismondi has given, at the end of each volume, an excellent summary of the contents, serving as a synoptical compendium of the history, not only for reference, but for information. He had adopted the same plan in his Ita lian Republics, and there are, perhaps, few books, whether of a narrative or argumentative character, in which it might not be usefully employed. The increasing extent of literature will re quire every advantage of machinery to aid the limited capacities of intellectual labour. The index-maker will probably soon take a station in literary usefulness and respectability not much below the lexicographer; in many instances his duties exacts higher de gree of acuteness and knowledge. But in the present state of things this task can in general be only executed with perfect ad vantage by the author himself. Explanation of the Book:

Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 6: June and October, 1830 It was one fatal effect of the perseverance with which Satan and his dealings were thus brought before the view of every one, that thousands of weak and depraved minds, were actually led into the belief that they had formed a connection with the evil being, and that the visions which had so long haunted the brain of Sprenger and his associates had been realized in their own case. In this way alone, can we in some measure account for the strange confessions which form the great peculiarity in the witch trials, where unhappy creatures, in the full knowledge of their fate. Explanation of the Book:

Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 32: Published in October, 1843, and January, 1844 Let us ook at him a little closer. Jean Jacques is more al laded to in general terms than surve ed minutely now-a-days, and it will be not altogether lost time to follow (briefly, of course) the career of a man who made so great a noise in epoch, and whose influence is likely to be more permanent than most of his contemporaries. Rousseau had a positive side; he had a constructive as well as a destructive theory; and therefore does he rightly belong to the Dudevant category of grand, ' as an originator, although we would not, on that account, exclude him from the predicament of fort.' Explanation of the Book:

Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 3: Published in September, 1828, and January, 1829 While the Arabs yet wandered over the desert, dividing their time between the care of their ocks and petty warfare, the atten tion they paid to language augured and facilitated their future cul tivation. It appears instinctive in man in every stage of society to pique himself on the purity of his speech. Even the Green lander mocks the stranger who mispronounces his uncouth poly syllables; and we find that language frequently attains, as among the Indians of North America, a high degree of copiousness and regularity, long previous to any social or literary advancement.
