This book helps kids discover the world Jesus lived in through maps, charts, graphs, and other infographic elements. They'll learn about the culture Jesus lived in-his Jewish religion, the power of the ruling Roman Empire, the role of fishermen and carpenters and shepherds. It's an invitation to explore the stories of Jesus in their cultural context, bringing new life to familiar biblical events. A generously illustrated monograph on the acclaimed French architect and engineer Marc Mimram whose original work is influenced by both disciplines. Since his debut as an architect and engineer with a footbridge over a highway in Toulouse, France, Marc Mimram has completed a large number of civil engineering structures and architectural projects in France and around the world. This book highlights Mimram's distinctive penchant for connecting architecture with the natural world, as well as his profound understanding of the relationship between design and structure. Looking at key themes in Mimram's work over three decades, this volume examines works such as the School of Architecture in Strasbourg and the award-winning Hassan II Bridge in Morocco to show how the architect's elegant and economical designs evolve from an appreciation of the natural or urban landscape of each project.

Animal expressions: Franz Marc's search for a universal art Franz Marc (1880-1916) became known principally for his images of animals: blue horses, yellow tigers, red fawns. What was it that led him to concentrate on painting animals? Marc himself explained his choice of subject matter in these words: "From an early date I felt humankind to be 'ugly'; animals seemed to me possessed of a greater beauty and purity..." Seeing Marc merely as a painter of animals proves, however, premature. Marc, cofounder of the Blauer Reiter group of Expressionist artists, was deeply dissatisfied with the impurity of the world, and was on a quest for a universal art which would resolve the contrarieties of life in the harmony of creation. Using pure colors highly charged with symbolic values, adopting crystalline shapes, and absorbing the influence of Cubism, he moved steadily towards an abstract order of image, coming closer to his own understanding of a better world. At the age of 36, Franz Marc's life was cut short when he died in the Battle of Verdun. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

The proactive approach to the stock market - don't be a victim - there is something you can do about it.Swing trading is an approach to the stock market which is concerned less with value (a moveable feast as many have found out), and more with exploiting short-term upswings and downswings in share prices and market indices. Although the ranks of swing traders swell daily, not many traders know that there is a type of chart, a swing chart, which is designed specifically for swing trading.In this ground-breaking book, Marc Rivalland, author of 'The Trader' column in Investors Chronicle, shows how swing charts can be used to perfect market timing. Moreover, Marc reveals his hitherto secret modifications to Gann swing charts which make them even more effective for stock market traders. W. D. Gann said "a study of swings in active stocks will convince a man that he can make far greater profits in swings than in any other way of trading." With this book, you get Gann and more.In addition, Marc uses his two decades of experience with point & figure charts to bring to readers an up-to-date and thoroughly modern evaluation of the best point & figure signals to use when trading individual equities. Point & figure is enjoying an enormous resurgence. Readers of this book will discover new insights into this proven and popular 100+year old method of charting share prices.Marc reveals his proprietary method of integrating swing charts and point & figure charts to further increase the chances of success. There is a chapter on the vital RSI indicator and a chapter devoted solely to those more passively inclined - long-term buy-and-hold investors.In every case, the best trading tactics are discussed.Each technique is critically examined. The advantages are highlighted but t

OLD ENEMIES NEVER DIE Cuba and the United States are in talks to normalize relations, something the old guard on the Communist-controlled island has vowed to stop—by any means necessary. Zayda de la Guardia, a rogue general in the Cuban security services, has gotten his hands on a nuclear weapon left over from the Cold War. He plans to launch it on Miami, an attack that could kill millions. There’s just one thing standing in his way: special agent Jericho Quinn and his team have traveled undercover to Cuba to unravel de la Guardia’s plot before it ignites a nuclear holocaust. Thrown into a secret prison, pursued by assassins, and trapped on the tiny island during one of the worst hurricanes of the century, Quinn and his crew must survive a trial by fire to prevent an international confrontation that would make the Cuban Missile Crisis look like a fist fight. Praise for Marc Cameron’s Open Carry “Cameron, who has nearly three decades in law enforcement and a stint as a U.S. Marshal, keeps all the plot points delicately balanced and at the same time creates sympathetic heroes, depraved villains, and nail-biting action. Readers will eagerly await his next.” —Publishers Weekly,STARRED REVIEW “Cameron effectively combines investigation and straight-ahead action . . . a compelling, never-give-an-inch hero who will appeal to Jack Reacher fans.” —Booklist

Condemned by the Nazis as a degenerate artist, Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a German painter whose stark linearity and emotive use of color eloquently expressed the pain and trauma of war. In work such as his celebrated Fate of the Animals, Marc created a raw emotional expression of primitive violence which he called a premonition of the war which would eventually be the cause of his own untimely death at the age of 36.

A classic, prize-winning novel about an epic migration and a lone woman haunted by the past in frontier Waipu. In the 1850s, a group of settlers established a community at Waipu in the northern part of New Zealand. They were led there by a stern preacher, Norman McLeod. The community had followed him from Scotland in 1817 to found a settlement in Nova Scotia, then subsequently to New Zealand via Australia. Their incredible journeys actually happened, and in this winner of the New Zealand Book Awards, Fiona Kidman breathes life and contemporary relevance into the facts by creating a remarkable fictional story of three women entangled in the migrations - Isabella, her daughter Annie and granddaughter Maria. McLeod's harsh leadership meant that anyone who ran counter to him had to live a life of secrets. The 'secrets' encapsulated the spirit of these women in their varied reactions to McLeod's strict edicts and connect the past to the present and future.

Marc and Dog: A Dual Quest for Survival Dog is running for his life. Wrongly blamed after a child was taken, the wolf went deep into the wilderness to avoid human hunters. The last thing he wanted was to be shoved into someone else’s flight for safety. Marcus Brady is a Marine Sniper, just returned from a long deployment that did little to boost his faith in humanity. He prefers to spend his home time in parks and forests, avoiding people, but barely a day passes before the Corporal is ambushed and forced to use the skills he has developed over nearly six years in the Corps. Except, this time, instead of a gritty fire team or squad of angry Marines fighting alongside, his backup is a lethal wolf that likes to attack while his back is turned. If Marc can’t make friends, it may cost both their lives.
|Author||: Marc Zvi Brettler|
The Book of Judges has typically been treated either as a historical account of the conquest of Israel and the rise of the monarch, or as an ancient Israelite work of literary fiction. In this new approach, Brettler contends that Judges is essentially a political tract, which argues for the legitimacy of Davidic kingship. He skilfully and accessibly shows the tension between the stories in their original forms, and how they were altered and reused to create a book with a very different meaning. Important reading for all those studying this part of the Bible.
