Explanation of the Book:

The definitive oral history of the cult classic Dazed and Confused, featuring behind-the-scenes stories from the cast and crew and written with the cooperation of Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater. Dazed and Confused not only heralded the arrival of filmmaker Richard Linklater, it introduced a cast of unknowns who would become the next generation of movie stars. Embraced as a cultural touchstone, the 1993 film would also make Matthew McConaughey’s famous phrase—alright, alright, alright—ubiquitous. But it started with a simple idea: Linklater thought people might like to watch a movie about high school kids just hanging out and listening to music on the last day of school in 1976. To some, that might not even sound like a movie. But to a few studio executives, it sounded enough like the next American Graffiti to justify the risk. Dazed and Confused made almost no money at the box office and seemed destined to disappear. Then something weird happened: Linklater turned out to be right. This wasn’t the kind of movie everybody liked, but it was the kind of movie certain people loved, with an intensity that felt personal. No matter what their high school experience was like, they thought Dazed and Confused was about them. Alright, Alright, Alright is the story of how this iconic film came together and why it worked. Combining behind-the-scenes photos and insights from nearly the entire cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, and many others, and with the full cooperation of Linklater himself, it offers an inside look at how a budding filmmaker and a cast of newcomers made a period piece that would feel timeless for decades to come.

Explanation of the Book:

GOLD MEDALIST OF FOREWORD REVIEWS' 2015 INDIEFAB AWARDS IN WOMEN'S STUDIES What's wrong with black women? Not a damned thing! The Sisters Are Alright exposes anti–black-woman propaganda and shows how real black women are pushing back against distorted cartoon versions of themselves. When African women arrived on American shores, the three-headed hydra—servile Mammy, angry Sapphire, and lascivious Jezebel—followed close behind. In the '60s, the Matriarch, the willfully unmarried baby machine leeching off the state, joined them. These stereotypes persist to this day through newspaper headlines, Sunday sermons, social media memes, cable punditry, government policies, and hit song lyrics. Emancipation may have happened more than 150 years ago, but America still won't let a sister be free from this coven of caricatures. Tamara Winfrey Harris delves into marriage, motherhood, health, sexuality, beauty, and more, taking sharp aim at pervasive stereotypes about black women. She counters warped prejudices with the straight-up truth about being a black woman in America. “We have facets like diamonds,” she writes. “The trouble is the people who refuse to see us sparkling.”

Explanation of the Book:

"THE SMARTEST BOOK OF THE YEAR" (THE WASHINGTON POST) In these provocative, powerful essays acclaimed writer/journalist Jeff Chang (Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, Who We Be) takes an incisive and wide-ranging look at the recent tragedies and widespread protests that have shaken the country. Through deep reporting with key activists and thinkers, passionately personal writing, and distinguished cultural criticism, We Gon’ Be Alright links #BlackLivesMatter to #OscarsSoWhite, Ferguson to Washington D.C., the Great Migration to resurgent nativism. Chang explores the rise and fall of the idea of “diversity,” the roots of student protest, changing ideas about Asian Americanness, and the impact of a century of racial separation in housing. He argues that resegregation is the unexamined condition of our time, the undoing of which is key to moving the nation forward to racial justice and cultural equity.

Explanation of the Book:

Dear Parents and Teachers, You might ask, Why did we write this book for children? We have realized over the years that it is important to talk with children about difficult issues happening in the world. They do notice them, and they do worry. It is better for them when we, as the adults, bring up these issues in a safe, caring way, allowing them to express their ideas and even their fears. As many as fifteen thousand children in the United States are placed in foster care due to detainment or deportation of a parent. The placement of children in protective care usually lasts as long as the legal proceedings, which could take months. Teachers have little idea of how to work with children with these kinds of emotional challenges. At present, there is a lack of research on the specific ways that the deportation of a parent shapes the children left behind. What we do know, however, is that the separation of families under these kinds of circumstances is certain to have adverse consequences for newborns, grade-school children, and adolescents alike. As parents and educators, we can help all children understand what the children of undocumented immigrants are going through. We hope this book will help them see these children as very like them, with loving families, hopes, and dreams.

Explanation of the Book:

A fresh, innovative biography of the twentieth century’s most iconic filmmaker. In The Twelve Lives of Alfred Hitchcock, Edward White explores the Hitchcock phenomenon—what defines it, how it was invented, what it reveals about the man at its core, and how its legacy continues to shape our cultural world. The book’s twelve chapters illuminate different aspects of Hitchcock’s life and work: “The Boy Who Couldn’t Grow Up”; “The Murderer”; “The Auteur”; “The Womanizer”; “The Fat Man”; “The Dandy”; “The Family Man”; “The Voyeur”; “The Entertainer”; “The Pioneer”; “The Londoner”; “The Man of God.” Each of these angles reveals something fundamental about the man he was and the mythological creature he has become, presenting not just the life Hitchcock lived but also the various versions of himself that he projected, and those projected on his behalf. From Hitchcock’s early work in England to his most celebrated films, White astutely analyzes Hitchcock’s oeuvre and provides new interpretations. He also delves into Hitchcock’s ideas about gender; his complicated relationships with “his women”—not only Grace Kelly and Tippi Hedren but also his female audiences—as well as leading men such as Cary Grant, and writes movingly of Hitchcock’s devotion to his wife and lifelong companion, Alma, who made vital contributions to numerous classic Hitchcock films, and burnished his mythology. And White is trenchant in his assessment of the Hitchcock persona, so carefully created that Hitchcock became not only a figurehead for his own industry but nothing less than a cultural icon. Ultimately, White’s portrayal illuminates a vital truth: Hitchcock was more than a Hollywood titan; he was the definitive modern artist, and his significance reaches far beyond the confines of cinema.

Explanation of the Book:

Jordan's Journey is the memoir of a childhood cancer survivor. The narrative follows Jordan as he endures treatment for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of five, then again at nine when the cancer returns in the form of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The adult Jordan composes his reminiscences with a straightforward simplicity and equanimity that make his youthful struggle all the more poignant. He outlines his course of treatment at nine: chemotherapy, radiation, a stem cell transplant, and all the terrible accompanying side effects of these therapies. He expresses gratitude for his family's support, his parents' abiding love, and the care he received from doctors and nurses and teachers. Rather than chapters, the memoir is organized into short vignettes. This structure gives his reader brief glimpses into his life as a patient and a child. Moments of good humor enter into the account (memories of his picky eating, music playing, and a joyful trip to the fair just for a turkey leg), as do moments of deep sadness (memories of childhood friends--fellow patients during his seemingly endless stays in the hospital--who passed away). Toward the end of the manuscript, a section of his mother's diary, which is addressed to God, is reproduced. This excursion from Jordan's point of view to his mother's is extremely moving and forms a fitting testament to his mother's care and to the family's faith. The memoir ends inspirationally, with an account of Jordan's subsequent achievements and his advice to others who struggle with cancer.
